What is natural building?
Natural building is fun, beautiful and sustainable, it can be cheap and has a small carbon footprint. It is aesthetically pleasing to the eye and can make a fantastic home to live in. Not only that but you can do it yourself with a few basic skills.
Natural buildings are cool in the summer and hot in the winter without the use of airconditioning or a mass of heating to warm your home. In Thailand our aim is to keep cool. The first thing people say when walking into our roundhouse is how beautiful it is, the second is how cool it is.
All of this doesn't come without a lot hard work. Some might say natural building is easy. We beg to differ. Natural building is extremley labour intensive but what you get out of it is far more rewarding than what you put in.
Why it matters?
Natural building is not new, our ancestors built with natural materials going back to the beginning of our existence. They created buildings which have stood the test of time and still stand today.
Sucked into todays building regulations we are slowly surrendering the skills, crafts and materials which were passed down from generation to generation.
Todays buildings are the number one consumer of energy and resources and account for 1/3 of all green house gases. In as little as ten years time there will be an extra 1 billion people on earth. That means more homes, more resourses, more energy and even more green house gases. By building with natures sustainable materials we reduce the need for plastics, cements and harmful chemicals and bring a healthy place to live or work.
By sharing skills and learning together we can all make a difference.
The Mud Hutters want to tackle the problem and share our love and knowledge for natural building along the way.
Lets pass down what the next generation deserve.
